Robert Pershing Wadlow
(1918 - 1940) was and is the tallest human being ever recorded. He reached 8'
11.1" (272 cm) in height and 490 pounds (222.26 kg) in weight before his death
at the age of 22. His height was due to an overactive pituitary gland.
Robert Wadlow was born in Alton, Illinois on February 22 1918. At the
time he weighed only 8' 6 ounces (3.8 kg). He attracted attention due to his
rapid growth when all his four siblings grew at a more normal speed. At the age
of 13 he became the world's tallest Boy Scout with a height of 7'4 (224 cm).
At age 18 his height was 8'4 (254 cm) and he weighed 390 pounds (177
kg). His size 37 shoes cost $100.00 a pair.
At the age of 20 Wadlow
signed a contract with the International Shoe Company; he received free shoes in
exchange for a promotional tour. He traveled all around the USA with his father.
In 1936 he enrolled in Shurtleff College with the intention of studying
law.
By 1937 he had exceeded the previous records. However, his size
begun to take its toll. He had to keep braces in his feet to walk and had little
sensation in them.
On July 4 1940 Wadlow was taken ill in Manistee,
Michigan; a faulty brace had caused a blister and bad infection. Doctors treated
him with blood transfusions and emergency surgery but his fever got worse. On
July 15 1940 he died in his sleep. He was buried in Alton on July 19.
In
1984 his hometown raised a bronze statue in his memory. His family destroyed his
belongings lest they become collectables.

Leonid Stadnyk (born 1971 in Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union) is a
controversial claimant to the status of the world's tallest living man. He is a
certified veterinarian and veterinary surgeon and lives with his mother in the
village of Podolyantsi, Ukraine. He claims to be 2.53 meters (8 feet 4 inches)
tall, weighs about 200 kg (440 pounds) (April, 2004) but has stopped growing,
because the tumor in his pituitary gland which caused him to grow so large has
disappeared. He also claims to have the largest palm size recorded, at 31
centimeters (12¼ inches) long. These claims have not been independently
verified.
Leonid Stadnyk's excessive growth began after brain surgery when he was 13 years
old. He developed a pituitary gland tumor which caused the gland to secrete
large amounts of growth hormone, resulting in what doctors describe as
acromegalic gigantism.
Although claiming to be the tallest man in the world, he refused to be measured
by Guinness World Records.
Guinness commented:
A number of people claim to be tallest, but unless they are measured three times
in 24 hours, they cannot be considered for the category. Leonid Stadnyk refuses
to be measured by us. We have been told that it is because he doesn't want to
court publicity — yet he continues to claim to be the tallest. Unfortunately we
can only conclude due to previous experience, that he refuses to be measured
officially by us because he is not the height he claims to be.
Guinness currently recognizes Bao Xishun, at 2.361 meters (7 feet 8.95 inches),
as the world's tallest living human being.
Most recently, a Pravda news report in Spring 2006 reported that Leonid Stadnyk
grew 2 centimeters (about one inch) in the last year, not accounting the time
between the original Spring 2004 report and Spring 2005. Therefore Stadnyk would
have to be at least 2.56 meters (8 feet 5 inches) and possibly taller. According
to Pravda, his health is slowly failing in that he needs to hold on to limbs of
trees and the side of his house to walk about. Also a group of Ukraine business
people donated a satellite dish and a computer to Stadnyk and now he is on the
Internet.
Tallest Woman Ever Recorded
250 cm (8 ft 2 in)
Zeng Jinlian (June 26, 1964 – February 13, 1982) was the tallest
woman ever recorded. Born in China with gigantism, she grew to be 8 ft 1¾ in
(248 cm) tall, making her the tallest known woman. However, she could not stand
up straight due to a severely deformed spine. She died in Hunan, China at age
17.
At 4 years of age, she was 5 ft 1½ in (156 cm) tall.

Allen was a 2.95-kg (6.5-lb) baby, and her abnormal growth began soon after her
birth in June 1955. By the age of 10 she stood 1.905 m (6 ft 3 in) tall, and was
2.16 m (7 ft 1 in) by 16 years old. Sandy had a dream to break free of a world,
that she felt she had outgrown. In her first letter to Guinness World Records in
1974 she wrote, "I would like to get to know someone that is approximately my
height. It is needless to say my social life is practically nil and perhaps the
publicity from your book may brighten my life." The accolade did help to bring
about a reversal of fortunes for the Indiana secretary. First, there was an
offer from film director Federico Fellini to take a role in his film Casanova in
1975, and then her first date with a 7-ft Illinois man. On July 14, 1977, she
went into hospital for a pituitary gland operation to stop further growth.
Nowadays poor circulation and weak leg muscles mean she is dependent on a wheel
chair.
