Round 1
Griffin kicks the body and legs of Ortiz and misses several punches that fall short. Ortiz cracks Forrest with a straight right that followed a jab. Ortiz steps forward and takes Griffin down with a fast double. Ortiz elbows twice from the top and Griffin uses a kimura to stand. Ortiz now has Griffin in the clinch against the fencing, until their roles positions are reversed. Griffin fails on a trip and knees Ortiz twice in the midsection. Ortiz gets off the fence. Ortiz attacks and Griffin lights him up with a right hand. Ortiz shoots and Forrest easily steps away from it. The fighters trade sloppy punches. Griffin goes to the clinch and Ortiz throws open-handed smacks to both ears.

Round 2
Griffin goes to work on the legs of Ortiz with low kicks. Ortiz catches a foot and finishes a single leg. Ortiz elbows with his left and throws punches with his right. Ortiz passes top half guard and Griffin uses the window to get to his feet. Both fighters miss sloppy right-hand leads. Griffin misses a “Superman” punch and then connects with a front kick to the face that ejects Ortiz’s mouthguard. Referee Josh Rosenthal calls time to retrieve the safety device and the fight is restarted. Ortiz gets a takedown and unloads a right hammerfist that Griffin checks. Ortiz begins to work punches from both hands, but Griffin is blocking and using head movement to avoid the blows. Ortiz lands an elbow and Griffin is a bloody mess. There is a massive cut above the right eye of Griffin. Rosenthal moves in for a closer look and Forrest sweeps to take the top position. The cut appears to be in a bad location.

Round 3
Looking little worse for the wear following some superb work by his cutman, Griffin throws two lazy front kicks that miss. Griffin lands a low kick and begins to peeper Ortiz with his hands. Ortiz’s conditioning isn’t where it used to be after such a long layoff. Griffin is landing punches from both hands at will and Ortiz is just covering up. Griffin stuffs an Ortiz shot and commences work on the Californian’s nose. Ortiz has no answer for the jab and right hand. Griffin lands a clean left hook and a low kick. One minute remains in the contest. Griffin uses his jab to set up another snapping kick to Ortiz’s lead leg. Ortiz drops levels for a single-leg takedown and Griffin shrugs it off. Ortiz lands his best punch of the round in the bout’s final moments in the form of a right hand. Big round for Griffin.
